Multiple MVPs and Championships

Tonight the Golden State Warriors, up 3-0, play Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Should they win tonight (or in the next four games), Steph Curry will become the ninth player to have won multiple NBA MVPs (2) and multiple NBA championships (2).

The other eight players who hold this distinction are:

  1. LeBron James - 4 MVPs, 3 championships
  2. Tim Duncan - 2 MVPs, 5 championships
  3. Michael Jordan - 5 MVPs, 6 championships
  4. Magic Johnson - 3 MVPs, 5 championships
  5. Larry Bird - 3 MVPs, 3 championships
  6. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - 6 MVPs, 6 championships
  7. Wilt Chamberlain - 4 MVPs, 2 championships
  8. Bill Russell - 5 MVPs, 11 championships
On the flip side, there are only two players who have won multiple MVPs but never won a championship:
  1. Steve Nash - 2 MVPs, 0 championships
  2. Karl Malone - 2 MVPs, 0 championships
Speaking of MVPs with bad luck, the following players have the distinction of winning one or more MVP awards, but never reaching the Finals:
  1. Derrick Rose - 1 MVP (still active, though, so may reach the Finals one day)
  2. Steve Nash - 2 MVPs
Poor Steve Nash.
